Bird Feeders

  • Where should I hang my bird feeder?

Hang your feeder in a tree about 6 feet high and about 6 feet out from the trunk. This offers safety from predators, as well as natural cover. Ideally, there should be bushes nearby. Some species like to roost near the feeder and swoop in; take a seed – then fly back to their cover in the bushes.

  • What kind of food should I feed the birds?

Certain foods tend to attract certain birds.  There are many different varieties of bird seeds and mixtures on the market. The two most common types of seed are the black-oil sunflower seed and wild bird seed mix.  Black-oil sunflower seeds are high in energy and have thin shells, making them the preferred food item for a wide variety of birds.  Wild bird seed mix is also very common.  Any number of seeds may be combined into a commercial seed mix or you can create your own.  Try mixes containing millet, cracked corn and sunflower seed to attract the widest variety of birds.

  • Will feeding birds in late summer stop their migration?

Some people believe they should stop feeding birds right after Labor Day because the bird’s migration southward will be interrupted.  This is not true.   A bird’s migratory urge is triggered by the length of the day and no amount of food in you feeder will stop that.  In fact, your feeder might provide a much needed energy boost along a bird’s migration route.

Hummingbird Feeders

  • How do I make the nectar?

Nectar is sugar water that is used to attract hummingbirds and orioles. To make nectar, add one part sugar to four parts boiling water and stir. Do not use honey. When the mixture is cool, it is ready for use. You can store extra sugar water in your refrigerator for up to one week.

  • Should I use red food coloring?

No.  Although it has not been proven that dye is harmful to hummingbirds, it has been proven that it is unnecessary to use red dye to attract the birds.  Natural flower nectar isn’t colored, so why put something in your sugar solution that the real thing doesn’t have?

  • How often do I have to clean my hummingbird feeder and what is the best way to do so?

Hummingbird feeders must be cleaned and nectar changed every 3 to 4 days – more often in hotter weather. Remove flowers and thoroughly rinse out your feeder in warm water each time you change your nectar.

  • Where is the best place to put my hummingbird feeder?

Put out as many feeders as you want, but make sure that you are able to maintain all of them. Planting flowers helps to attract the hummingbirds to your yard. Try out different locations for your feeder. Once a hummingbird has discovered that a feeder is a reliable source of food, it will remember exactly where that feeder is and return to that feeder time and time again. Try to avoid full sun, as the sugar solution in the feeders will spoil more rapidly.

  • How does the hummingbird reach the nectar?

Hummingbirds actually have extremely long tonuges, which allowes them to easily reach to the bottom of the feeder.

Firepots

  • How do I use my firepot?
Firepots produce a flame with the use of our environmentally friendly fuel gel. Pour the gel into the stainless steel cup up to about 1 inch from the top. Light with a lighter or match and enjoy the dancing flames. When finished, extinguish the flame using the metal snuffer included with your firepot.
